Dietary Supplement Recall by FDA

FDA Warns Consumers about "Total Body Formula" and "Total Body Mega Formula"Distributor recalls dietary supplement products after reports of adverse reactions

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase or consume Total Body Formula in the flavors of Tropical Orange and Peach Nectar, or Total Body Mega Formula in the Orange/Tangerine flavor. The liquid dietary supplement products may cause severe adverse reactions, including significant hair loss, muscle cramps, diarrhea, joint pain and fatigue.

The Total Body Formula products are sold in eight-ounce and 32-ounce plastic bottles. The Total Body Mega Formula is sold in 32-ounce plastic bottles. Both products are distributed by Total Body Essential Nutrition of Atlanta. The company is the sole distributor of the products and has voluntarily recalled Total Body Formula in the flavors of Tropical Orange and Peach Nectar and Total Body Mega Formula in Orange/Tangerine flavor.

The Florida Department of Health recently provided reports to the FDA on 23 individuals who experienced serious reactions to these products seven to 10 days after ingestion. In all cases, the reactions included significant hair loss, muscle cramps, diarrhea, joint pain and fatigue. The FDA subsequently learned and is investigating a report that some individuals in Tennessee using the same products have experienced similar reactions.

FDA laboratories are analyzing samples of the products to identify the cause of the reactions, including the possibility that the products contain excessive amounts of selenium, which is known to cause symptoms such as those described in the adverse events reported to the agency. Selenium, a trace mineral, is needed only in small amounts for good health.
The products have been distributed in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The FDA is advising consumers in all states to avoid using the products immediately and to discard the products by placing them in a trash receptacle outside of the home.
Consumers who have been taking the products and have experienced adverse reactions should consult their health care professional. Consumers and health care professionals can also report adverse events to the FDA's MedWatch program at 800-FDA-1088 or online at

Walking Away From A Possible Stroke

Stroke is the nation’s third leading cause of death. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain stops due to a blood clot or burst blood vessel. According to a new study, being only moderately fit can significantly lower your risk of having a stroke.
The study was led by Steven Hooker who heads the University of South Carolina’s Prevention Research Center in Columbia, SC. The research was reported on February 21, 2008 during Hooker’s presentation at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference in New Orleans, LA.
For their research, Hooker and his colleagues used data from a study of more than 61,000 adults at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. After taking a treadmill test, the participants periodically answered health surveys. The latest research divided the group into four levels of fitness and looked at how many of them had strokes after following them for an average of 18 years.
The study found that men in the most fit group enjoyed a 40% reduction for risk of stroke compared to the least fit men. The most fit women enjoyed a 43% reduction in their risk of stroke compared with women in the least fit group. Hooker commented that even those who were moderately fit had a lower risk of stroke and that most people can reach that fitness range by walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, five times a week.

Preventing Ovarian CAncer

A recent study published in the November 15th, 2007, issue of the International Journal of Cancer suggests that diets high in certain flavonoid compounds found in vegetables, fruits, beans and tea may significantly lower a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Flavonoids are a large family of antioxidant compounds known as phytochemicals. They are part of a plant’s natural defense system that helps the plant fight off disease and infection. When consumed as food, these powerful nutrients help the human body to fight disease and infection as well by protecting cells from DNA damage. Scientists also believe that some flavonoids may also fight cancer by regulating cell growth, fighting inflammation or by changing hormone levels.

This study looked at over 66,000 participants over a 14 year period and focused on flavonoid consumption. Two particular flavonoids, kaempferol and luteolin appear to be particularly helpful for protection against ovarian cancer. Kaempferol, a flavonoid found in tea, broccoli, kale and spinach along with luteolin which is found in peppers, carrots, cabbage and celery were both shown to offer significant protection against ovarian cancer. Women who consumed the most kaempferol enjoyed a 40% decreased risk of ovarian cancer and women who consumed the most luteolin enjoyed a 34% decreased risk when compared to women who consumed the least of these flavonoids. Researchers also noted that a third phytochemical, myricetin, also seemed to be somewhat protective. Myricetin is found in tea, dried beans, raisins and blueberries.

What Is The Size of Your Stomach?

Vitamin Care for Cats Recalled by The Hartz Mountain Corp.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation Recalls Vitamin Care for Cats Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 7, 2008 -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling a second specific lot of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to concerns that bottles within the lot may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall. Hartz recalled a specific lot code of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats last November due to similar concerns. Both lot codes were manufactured for Hartz by UFAC (USA) Inc. in 2007, and were removed from distribution last November. However, bottles from the second lot had been shipped to customers prior to their having been removed from distribution.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, all of whom are at particular risk from exposure and should avoid handling these products.
Salmonella symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea in both cats and humans. Anyone experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek immediate medical attention. Owners of cats exhibiting these symptoms should also seek veterinary assistance.

The product involved is 739 bottles of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats, lot code SZ 22771, UPC number 32700-97701. While normal testing conducted by Hartz and UFAC has not revealed the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz products, recent sampling conducted by the FDA did detect the presence of Salmonella.
Although the company has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to recover this product from consumers. Cat owners should check the lot code on their bottles, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bottle has lot code SZ 22771 or lot code SZ-16371 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Teenagers - Eat More and Weigh Less

New research from the University Of Minnesota School Of Public Health shows that teenagers who eat breakfast on a regular basis tend to weigh less, exercise more, and eat a healthier diet than teens that usually skip breakfast. The research is published in the March, 2008, issue of the medical journal Pediatrics.

The study followed 2,216 adolescents and their lifestyle habits for five years beginning at age 14. The researchers were surprised to discover that the more regularly the teens ate breakfast, the lower their body mass index was. Body mass index, or BMI, is a ratio of height and weight. Those who always skipped breakfast on average had a higher BMI.

According to previous research, 12 to 34 percent of children and teens age 6 to 19 regularly skip breakfast and we also know that 25% of 6 to 19 year olds are overweight or obese. The researchers also warned about rates of obesity, which have doubled in children and nearly tripled in adolescents over the past two decades, according to a 2007 report by the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office. Obesity has been clearly linked to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, asthma and diabetes.

Many people assume that skipping meals will help them to lose weight. In reality, when we skip a meal the body thinks that food is scarce so it slows the metabolism protect us from starving -we then have less energy so we burn fewer calories.
